About Us
We invest in a broad range of research on issues important to New Zealand, and support the development of health research careers. Our mission is 'benefiting New Zealand through health research'.
We are the agency responsible for managing the Government's investment in health research. In addition, we support the development of research careers, so that New Zealand can have a well-trained workforce in the future.
The HRC also contributes to maintaining an ethical and safe health research environment. The HRC's committees provide advice on gene technology, approve health and disability ethics committees and institutional ethics committees, monitor the data and safety of large clinical trials and review applications to use new medicines in trials.
We were established under the Health Research Council Act 1990 and are responsible to the Minister of Health. Our major funding agreement is through the Minister of Science and Innovation.
