District Health Board Research Fund - Overview
The District Health Board Research Fund was a partnership between the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the 21 District Health Boards effective from July 2005 to December 2009. The objective of this initiative was to commission research that addresses key knowledge gaps for DHBs and supports and promotes the translation of research into clinical practice. The research undertaken could include research on primary, secondary and tertiary services, as well as community and disability support services. The fund was worth a total of $6.2M over the three year duration of the contract.
Governance Group
A governance group was established to make strategic and policy decisions concerning the DHBRF. The governance group set the research priorities for the fund, determined the content of the RFPs and made the final funding decisions. Most recently the Governance Group was chaired by Professor Harry Rea. The other members were Dr Gary Jackson, Professor Mason Durie, Dr Sharon Kletchko, Ms Shelley Campbell, Mr Matthew Brougham, Ms Patricia Logan and Dr Robin Olds.
Priority Areas
A process of consultation with DHBs was undertaken to determine the priority areas for the research to be commissioned. A Steering Committee was appointed to oversee research projects within each priority area. Members had particular expertise in relevant areas and made recommendations to the governance group regarding the development of the research priority, the RFP and the associated assessment process. As research initiatives are currently underway, several of the Steering Committees continue to provide oversight for projects.
