Lay summary
The Auckland Tongan community has expressed deep concern that at least 20 Tongan youths, both male and female, have committed suicide over the past 12 months, far exceeding any other cause of death for this age group. In preparation for a larger project to address this suicide "epidemic", this feasibility project will evaluate community concerns and consult community leaders about their experiences of dealing with youth suicide. It will identify an acceptable mechanism for contacting the families involved, define a study sample and assess contentious issues within the community that may affect overall acceptability and the robustness of data collection.
