This inaugural research hui for Tauranga Moana whanau has three objectives; to provide the opportunity for descendents of Tauranga Moana to take stock of the full range of health and wellbeing research that is occurring within the area; to bring researchers who are genealogically linked to Tauranga Moana, but who have not lived there, home to connect with whanau/hapu/community; and provide a forum to discuss new priority areas for research for the tangata whenua (people) of the area. A number of outputs are anticipated, including a report for participants' hui and a strategic plan to consolidate and advance health research and capacity amongst Tauranga whanau. In the longer term, the issues identified at this hui will assist us to develop a research application to the HRC on an area of importance to Tauranga whanau.
