Lay summary
Cancer remains a leading cause of childhood death in New Zealand; however, the number of children surviving a childhood cancer diagnosis and its treatment now exceeds 85%. This success is associated with a significant number of children experiencing both short-and-long-term nutrition-related adverse effects. We propose to 1) understand the weight changes that occur during treatment and explore their association with treatment outcomes; 2) co-design evidence-informed nutrition guidelines and interventions with patients, whānau, Māori health researchers, clinicians, and community groups using an Aotearoa New Zealand-specific He Pikinga Waiora (HPW) Implementation Framework, and 3) develop an implementation and continued evaluation strategy for health delivery across the country. This project will provide guidelines to support nutrition that are standardised, culturally responsive, guided by evidence and consensus, reflective of their feeding experience, and is available for all children with cancer regardless of their weight at diagnosis or geographical location.
