Lay summary
Endometriosis is a chronic and debilitating condition and the most common cause of morbidity and infertility in women. It is characterised by the presence and growth of endometrium (womb lining) outside the womb. As invasive surgery is the only diagnostic tool and severe pain during periods is considered ‘normal’ in society, many women are reluctant to get help earlier, leading to significant diagnostic delay and increased severity of disease. The need for an early non-invasive diagnostic test for endometriosis is paramount. We propose a novel way to develop an easy, reliable non-invasive test for universal screening and early diagnosis of endometriosis. This will pioneer the way in which endometriosis is managed and transform the lives of millions women worldwide.
