Lay summary
A qualitative review on Māori health beliefs (hauora whakaaro) surrounding the tikanga and tapu of ocular surface examinations within optometry and ophthalmology. We will conduct focus groups of both Māori academics and clinicians as well as groups of Māori within the community. This will provide multiple perspectives on how cultural considerations of the tapu of the head intertwine with clinical aspects of ocular surface examination to inform how we engage with the Māori population in both optometry and ophthalmology clinical settings.
