Lay summary
Asthma is a complex condition and people with asthma have differing patterns of disease. Different patterns of airway inflammation and overlapping diseases such as hyperventilation and hay fever mean that treatment needs to be personalised to the individual. These characteristics can be collectively referred to as treatable traits. In severe asthma clinics we routinely assess many of these traits, and patients with severe asthma do better if they attend these clinics. However, most people with asthma are not seen in severe asthma clinics and there is very little data testing the efficacy of treatable trait-based management of moderate to severe asthma. This application describes a trial which would test whether treatable trait asthma management improves asthma outcomes, compared with care according to asthma guidelines. The feasibility study has been designed to test five specific feasibility issues that will affect the design of the full study.
